Judge praises garda who was surrounded by mob

A District Court judge this week praised the work of a Westport based garda who was surrounded by a mob who tried to stop him carrying out an arrest in the town. Garda Martin Kelly was attempting to carry out an arrest on Darren Heraty, Three Bridges, Islandeady, Castlebar, for a public order offence at Mill Street in Westport when a group of Heraty’s friends tried to stop Garda Kelly making the arrest. Garda Kelly was forced to call for back up from other officers who arrived at the scene to help their colleague.

Ballina man gets eight months for shocking incidents

Judge Conal Gibbons sentenced a Ballina man to a total of eight months in prison after convicting him of a number of offences. Derek Humber, 31 Trawley Terrace, Ballina, had appeared before Judge Gibbons the previous week where evidence was given in relation to two incidents which occurred earlier this year, one at Mayo General Hospital on February 20, and another at his home in Ballina on February 6 where he had to be arrested by gardaí for being threatening and abusive, and for being intoxicated in a public place and in possession of a broken bottle. He also faced a charge of failing to appear in court while on bail in Ballina on March 8, Humber pleaded guilty to all charges.
